This year’s Austrian Tasting Tokyo is mere weeks away – a chance for Japanese wine professionals to sample the veritable spectrum of Austrian wines. Here are all the details.

Partner story with Austrian Wine.

The Japanese wine trade will be introduced to more than 90 Austrian wineries at a large-scale tasting at Tokyo’s Togo Kinenkan, on 22 July 2025.

Organised by Austrian Wine in collaboration with Advantage Austria, there will be the chance to experience the full range of Austria’s wines, with over 500 available to try, encompassing all colours and sweetness levels. The event will introduce guests to the country’s rich winemaking history and varied terroirs through a walkaround tasting, at which many of the winemakers will be present.

“The special thing is that a lot of the wineries are personally represented by winemakers or employees of the winery – around 30 wineries this year,” says Patrick Eppacher, Austrian Wine’s Head of Markets International. “This format offers visitors a great opportunity to experience the variety of origins and allow them to dive deeper into Austria’s wine landscape.”

There will also be two masterclasses: one led by Kenichi Ohashi (Japan’s one and only Master of Wine) and the other by Takenori Beppu (Austrian Wine Ambassador).

As the biggest of Austrian Wine’s event formats, this particular annual tasting has not reached this scale since 2019 (more recent years have seen smaller walkaround tastings held without winemakers present). This year, they’re back and looking forward to their new location: “Togo Kinenkan gives a typical Japanese atmosphere with a beautiful garden,” says Eppacher.

Austria’s wines enjoy a “high quality image” in Japan, he explains. “Always fresh and vibrant. Also, the natural wine scene in Austria is well regarded in Japan as this wine category has a high importance there.”

It’s set to be an exciting event, featuring wineries both already imported into the country and those looking for importers. Take a look at all exhibitors and details for the day, below.

Masterclasses:

‘The Vibrancy of Austrian Wine from a Multidimensional Perspective’

12:00-13:00

Lecturer: Kenichi Ohashi MW (President of Yama-Jin Co., Ltd. / President, Red Bridge Co., Ltd.)

In 2024, Kenichi Ohashi MW visited Austria to conduct his own in-depth research. Based on his unique insights, he will provide an in-depth look into the dynamic nature of today’s Austrian wine industry. Going beyond grape varieties and regional diversity, this seminar will offer a fresh perspective on the exceptional quality of Austrian wines – explored through a guided tasting of eight carefully selected wines.

‘Classic/Natural – Styles of Four Iconic Austrian Grape Varieties’

14:30-15:30

Lecturer: Takenori Beppu (Representative of Wine in Motion, Austrian Wine Ambassador)

This seminar will explore the styles of four grape varieties that represent Austria: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Blaufränkisch. We will explain how the characteristics of each wine region and differences in classic VS natural winemaking approaches shape the expression of these varieties.
