About Rex Whistler Restaurant
The Tate are renowned for offering classic wines at the very best prices - they still buy a lot en-primeur, especially Burgundy, as well as strong representation from Italy, Australia and most recently South Africa. It has been the site of political and social intrigue over the decades, and from the 1970's gained a reputation for having one of the capital’s finest wine cellars. Hamish Anderson took charge of the wine programme in the 90's and remains involved, head sommelier Gustavo Medina looks after everything day to day (happy decant pre-ordered wines ready for your arrival). One of the few remaining restaurants who value holding bottles until they are ready to be enjoyed. Half-bottles also get a good look in. The food is best filed under 'smart brasserie', a perfectly unchallenging foil for all that delcious wine. A fantastic, and slightly unusual place to get properly stuck in.
