About Leigh Street Wine Room
Located in one of the most popular wine bar precincts in Adelaide, Leigh Street Wine Room differentiates itself from the rest with an intelligently designed space that focuses on organically farmed wines. The bar runs in the middle of a long room with an arched ceiling that makes the entire space looks like a tunnel with walls sporting wine shelves displaying 450 different wine labels. The booth, bar stools and tables seat 40 people at any given time. The food menu changes constantly with sustainable produce which Nathan, head chef and co-owner, mostly sources directly from farmers and fishermen.
This is the kind of place where I can walk in and comfortably spend hours grazing across their entire menu and pick from a diverse selection of lo-fi wines. If you don’t feel the high vibes from the hiphop music, you certainly will with the eclectic list of wines by the glass that changes every week. It is a refreshing place to add to the bar community in Adelaide, adding savvy interior design and ethical wines to the landscape.
Leigh Street Wine Room Wine List
With a focus on organically farmed wines, the list also shows support for smaller artisan producers who tend to their land with the utmost respect. Whether you are looking for natural or lofi, you will be charmed by verticals of some of the great amber wines of Emilia Romagna, graced by Italians gems, Emidio Pepe and Valentini as well as the best of Jura and Loire with producers such as Houillon, Bornard, Overnoy and Loire stars Francois Cotat and Sebastien Riffault.
There is a sense of community that is reflected in the list, especially when you can enjoy wines by the glass from a collaborative effort of the staff team with a local winery. There is a good balance between local, national and international producers. With international focusing mainly on France, Italy and Spain, you can also find gems from Austria, Germany, Georgia, Solvenia and Chile. The wines are categorized by style rather than countries or varieties, and I find that it is a great way to make a list that could otherwise appear esoteric, more accessible to navigate…
(Note: Star Wine List's ambassador Liinaa Jaumdally (Berry) runs the wine program at Leigh Street Wine Room.)
Wine Tasting at Leigh Street Wine Room
There is a monthly wine school that aims at educating people on organically sourced wines and what the term ‘natural’ actually means. You can find out more about the classes on their Instagram account. Topics covered range from producers style like Gravner/Radikon to Georgian amphora wines and new wave natural burgundy to Austrian/Slovenian native varieties as examples etc.
