L’Enclume Wine List
About L’Enclume
Simon Rogan’s three-star restaurant in the beautiful Cumbrian village of Cartmel, champions highly local farm-to-fork cooking. Every dish begins with ingredients from their farm and is built around what’s in season. Set in a former blacksmith (‘enclume’ is French for anvil) the décor is natural, reflecting the rural location, and the service warm and relaxed – this couldn’t be further from black tie and starched linen tablecloths.
You can select one of three wine pairings to go with the multi-course menu (Taster, Signature or Select) and then again for a specialist cheese flight. Reflecting the natural and artisanal approach to food, the wine list is predominantly smaller growers, working with respect for the grapes and terroirs.
Champagnes are all grower, with a thorough choice of all styles, NV and vintage. Whites and reds are organised first by region then by variety - (it’s very pleasing to navigate) with almost equal weighting given across the regions – for example, Alsace and the Jura gets almost as much of a look-in as Burgundy, making for a far more interesting and intelligent list. Classic reds have not been overlooked either, with Bordeaux, Burgundy and Italy ripe for choice, and some older vintages (albeit most from this century, it’s not a liquid mausoleum). To finish there’s a superb and super-interesting range of sweet wines from around the world. There’s something very cool, calm and collected about this list: in a nutshell, all killer, no filler.
