About Contento

Contento is permanently closed.

One of NYC’s most vibrant neighborhoods, El Barrio, aka Spanish Harlem, aka East Harlem, has too often been overlooked as a culinary destination. But when Contento opened its doors in 2021, a quiet block on East 111th Street suddenly became a pilgrimage for food and wine lovers and an unofficial clubhouse for NYC’s wine professionals. Contento’s co-founders and partners include sommeliers Yannick Benjamin and Mara Rudzinski, and the small but creative list reflects their deep knowledge and reverence for off-the-beaten-path wines. Head Sommelier Abe Zarate is now carrying the torch. Contento has you covered if your palate wants to take a journey that includes wines from New York, France, Georgia, Turkey, Spain, and Portugal. The kitchen is now being helmed by Chef Asia Shabazz, an East Harlem native, who has transitioned the formerly Peruvian-influenced menu to one that showcases flavors influenced by West Africa, the Caribbean, and soul food. In addition to the top-notch food and wine experience, Contento has earned acclaim for being designed as a barrier-free restaurant that creates a comfortable dining experience for individuals with disabilities. For example, the split-level bar makes it possible for customers in wheelchairs to enjoy the conviviality of dining at the bar. If you’re visiting museums on the uptown part of the Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue or the northeast section of Central Park, Contento is a great place to raise a glass at the end of the day.
