  12. Address: LAGAPLAN 5, 128 45 Bagarmossen

Axel Rolph Hansson was actually looking for a venue at Södermalm to open a wine bar. The locals of the suburb Bagarmossen are lucky that he failed to find one and instead opened Centan. This charming joint serves artisanal wines and tasty dishes both for lunch and dinner, six days a week.

Cork is a new charming, relaxed and cosy wine bar in the Old Town in Stockholm. The wine list focuses on Portugal, and the food is Mediterranean, leaning mostly towards Italy (you have to try the risotto!). The venue itself is quite small and intimate, with a lot of wood and – of course – cork. The best spot is by the bar counter, where you can chat with knowledgable owner/sommelier Alexandre Carreira, while he serves you some great wine.

The fire is still burning at Ekstedt, which was one of the first to use fire as the main source of energy in the kitchen. The ambiance is warm (!), the food is as good as ever and the service is friendly and professional. The Swedish celebrity chef Niklas Ekstedt has left the daily flow but the food here is consistently very good.

Wine bar and restaurant E & G (short for Egon and Gösen) is located at Birger Jarlsgatan in Stockholm, a few minute’s walk from the crowded neighbourhoods around Odengatan. Small, intimate and cosy and with an interior where wine is, literally, all around you.

Farang takes guests on a journey to Southeast Asian cuisines. The restaurant is located in an old factory hall and the rustic backdrop contrasts with the warm atmosphere. The restaurant is decidedly high end - great food. The bar in the front is cool and serves simpler dishes. For a fine dining lunch experience, this is one of my main choices in Stockholm.

  21. Address: Erstagatan 21, 116 36 Stockholm

By the Glass Wine List of the Year Sweden 2019

Experienced sommeliers Béatrice Becher and Jonas Sandberg opened the Stockholm wine bar they wanted to visit themselves in this eastern Södermalm part of town. The name plays on the French word for madness, Folie. As you'll see on the interior, it’s loosely related to Territoriet in Oslo. Folii is one of the best wine bars in town and they have won our wine list competition in the By the glass-category several times. There are tasty small dishes on the menu and if you are eager for a more full meal - drop in to their restaurant next door: Voisine.

  22. Address: Hornsbruksgatan 24-26, 117 34 Stockholm, Sverige

Fröken Vandal (Miss Vandal) may be Stockholm's first true hip hop wine bar, founded as it is by veteran rapper Petter and his crew. You might not believe it's a wine bar as you step in, as it kind of reminds you of a regular Södermalm bar, only amplified with heavy beats dropping from the speakers. But turn left, see the wine fridges bulging with vintage Barolos and you'll understand who's behind it: The Nebbiolo man Petter himself. The kitchen serves wine-friendly food and as a bonus it's open until 03 on weekends.

A lot of yummy snacks (don’t miss the gourgères with porcini, cheddar and thyme!) and wine-friendly dishes from the kitchen of The Flying Elk next door.

The rather angular exterior of the Waterfront Building does little to prepare you for the warm atmosphere you find inside. Among mismatched velvet chairs, deep sofas and a lively bar, grilled food and great wines are to be had. Griffin’s wine list has classics from Bordeaux and Burgundy but also a good selection of California wines. Champagne lovers also have plenty to choose from on the Griffins wine list.

  27. Phone: +46 70 090 03 79

    Address: Tegnérgatan 9, Stockholm

The team behind Hasselbo has lots of experience from maestro Mathias Dahlgren’s restaurants and you could consider Hasselbo to be a modern child of Matbaren. The level is very high in all from decoration, service to the small dishes that appear from the tiny kitchen. Both a wine bar and a restaurant, the full menu served in the bar as well.

  28. Phone: +46 8 519 421 53

    Address: Hornsbruksgatan 24, 117 34 Stockholm

When the experienced sommeliers Robert Andersson and Fredrik Iveskär planned the wine bar Hornstulls Bodega in Stockholm, they said they wanted something messy. It might not sound that nice but messy is actually a code word for “non-formal, busy, great wines and great ambiance”. And that’s exactly what they built. The Hornstulls Bodega wine list reaches from classic greats to the latest cool. Nowadays Andersson and Iveskär have moved on to their own wine import firm, but the ambiance and ambitious wine selection remain.

  30. Address: Fleminggatan 62B, Stockholm

    Address: Sveavägen 77, Stockholm

L'Avventura is the Italian flagship of the restaurant group Stureplansgruppen, located at Sveavägen in Vasastan. In the grand dining room you can find families celebrating birthdays, friends meeting up for dinner, couples on their first date and business diners. And at least one Italian winemaker we've met have named L'Avventura the best Italian restaurant in town. The pasta dishes are to die for. L'Avventura has an Italian American style and we think Tony Soprano would have felt at home at a corner table.

    Address: Västmannagatan 69, 113 26 Stockholm

Lilla Ego is well known for being run by three Chefs of the Year in Sweden and for being fully booked. However, you can come early and wait around for one of the drop in seats to be free, you will not be alone, nor disappointed. Although people come for the food, we also like to go there for the wine and relaxed ambiance. The Lilla Ego two wine lists are not the longest in town, but there is real breadth. The wine lists wines from well known wine regions like Burgundy, Piedmont, Wachau and California – some with good age too.

Is it possible that German wines and food is becoming a thing in Stockholm? First we had Bar Central and then E&G. Vinverket, located in northern Vasastan in central Stockholm, is more of a wine bar than a restaurant, and it feels like coming home to friends. Going down the stairs a few steps, and you'll find a wine cooler reaching from floor to ceiling, and a solid kitchen table serving both as bar and workplace. Walk a few more meters and sit down by the small tables, perfect for a tête a tête. You will be served smaller dishes, influenced by the Mediterranean cuisine.
