One of Sweden’s best restaurants – Aloë was awarded two Michelin stars 2020 – is hidden among the villas in a Stockholm suburb. If you can find it, you’re rewarded with a very original and sometimes spicy cuisine with influences ranging from Japan to North Africa. I have been here a million times, it's no secret I think it's absolutely fabulous. The wine list has a good mix of old and new world wines, and a good beverage pairing. Recently the front of the building, that used to house a furniture shop, has been converted to a lounge for the restaurant. Soon time for Michelin to award it with a...

Swedish master chef Tommy Myllymäki opened the grand fine dining restaurant Aira during the hard spring of 2020 when things were looking really bad for the dining scene. The vision paid off despite this and Aira is well on its way to being a new classic in the city - beautifully located by the seaside on Djurgården. The design is grand, modern and very Scandinavian, and the cuisine is very much the same. Aira has been rewarded with two stars by Guide Michelin. The service team is experienced and very professional. A must-visit for visitors to Stockholm. There is also a beautiful bar and outd...

Astrids is a small neighbourhood gem outside Stockholm city – you take the green subway line around 15 minutes from the city centre to get there. The place itself is modest but homely and cosy. The food is bistro-style, with dishes like beef tartar, fish soup and entrecôte (also several dishes to choose from for the kids), well-executed and tasty. The wine list is not the biggest, but impressive for being a small place on the outskirts of Stockholm. A bit over 100 different wines to choose from by the bottle and around ten by the glass. The list is leaning towards France, especially Burgundy...

As the name implies, the Stockholm restaurant and wine bar Babette is a feast in itself. A place for lively discussions over delicious small plates and some of Stockholm's most tasty pizzas. But don't miss the other plates from the chef's menu. In summer the crowd spills out onto a small terrace.

Brasserie Astoria in central Stockholm is the latest Frantzén group address and it is an impressive opening. A venue to behold, and the same goes for the crowd. The cuisine is respectful of the classics and the service is at the level you would expect for a top venue like this. The sommeliers have built a solid wine book from the start, including an impressive number of back vintages and a few natural producers as well. They will need to keep up the smart buying, considering the flow of great wine during Astoria’s opening. There is also a wine bar in one of the beautiful rooms.

It was a loss for Stockholm that Agrikultur recently closed its doors for good. It's all the more fun that Bord took over the premises to start a business of the same high calibre. Bord offers what they call "bistronomy" – ingredients and flavours you find at a fine dining restaurant but served in a more relaxed, neighbourhood-style environment. Joel Aronsson, who previously worked at (now closed) two-star Fäviken in Jämtland and Ett Hem in Stockholm, leads the work in the kitchen and serves well-executed dishes with personal twists. The menu is tight and changes regularly, depending on the s...

The idea with Bar Nîmes was for Kim Öhman, the restaurateur behind Farang, to realize a life-long dream of a French-Italian bistro with a homely ambience and straightforward flavours. And yes, he and the team has definitely succeeded. Bar Nîmes is the perfect neighbourhood bistro where you can drop in for a quick glass – or stay for the night. The food draws inspiration from southern France and northern Italy, with dishes such as Vitello Tonnato, Panzanella, Tajarin and duck, all well-executed with a homely feel and elevated flavours. The wine list also leans mainly towards France and Italy,...

Chez Jolie in Stockholm – with chef Mikael Einarsson, previously Djuret and Astoria, behind the pots – is a classic French bistro-style restaurant with a very relaxed and cosy ambience. On the food menu, you will find old-school classics mixed with more modern takes, where everything is very yummy. The wine list also focuses on the French, with great selections of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhône, with the addition of some wines from slightly lesser-known French regions and producers. The last few pages of the list also hold some high-quality wines from, for example, California and Italy.

Café Cuvée is a French bistro at Södermalm and the menu is dedicated to snacks and smaller dishes that can be shared. And great cheese. The little space is busy with locals and cozy with, yes, a French bistro vibe. Experienced sommelier Tina Trigg is a partner in the restaurant and the wine list is mostly French with plenty of Burgundy at reasonable prices. Coco & Carmen is a stylish, playful high-quality neighbourhood bistro in Östermalm, Stockholm. It opened in 2019 and is run by the team behind the more rowdy sibling Punk Royale. But if the latter is wild and crazy, Coco & Carmen is more classic in its style, without lacking elements of surprise and a cheerful atmosphere. The bistro also has a bar and from the wine cellar flows mostly natural wines with one or two classical cousins in the mix. Café Nizza’s wine list is mostly sourced from the Old World’s wine regions. DoMa started as a little restaurant in the home of the owners, but it is now found on Nybrogatan in the Östermalm neighbourhood. You’ll find a smaller space on the ground floor, a large bar downstairs, a separate dining room seating 8-12 and an outdoor terrace in summer. And catering, cakes and a menu for children! The menu is shall we say modern Swedish, diverse and the restaurant sources some produce from its own gardens at Ingarö. And it is very tasty. On the wineside we find many favorites from Champagne, Loire and Burgundy, but Austria, Italy and other destinations are present too.

This has given more space to the restaurant and there are several separate rooms for dinners and tastings. Wine bar and restaurant E & G (short for Egon and Gösen) is located at Birger Jarlsgatan in Stockholm, a few minute’s walk from the crowded neighbourhoods around Odengatan. The place is relaxed, like a living room away from home. The food is rustic and tasty and made for sharing – snacks, smaller dishes and stews. Small, intimate and cosy and with an interior where wine is, literally, all around you.

Farang takes guests on a journey to Southeast Asian cuisines. The restaurant is located in an old factory hall and the rustic backdrop contrasts with the warm atmosphere. The restaurant is decidedly high end - great food. The bar in the front is cool and serves simpler dishes. For a fine dining lunch experience, this is one of my main choices in Stockholm.

Freyja is the latest hot address from restaurant group Stureplansgruppen that is behind plenty of popular addresses in the capital. When Restaurant Frantzén re-opened in September 2018, they quickly and justly gained a lot of attention, and only half a year later the restaurant was awarded three Michelin stars – the first and only three-star in Sweden. The venue itself is spacious and light, and the dining experience takes place in different rooms and different floors. You start with some appetizers in the livingroom-like lounge and then eat the main courses seated by the wooden bar right in front of the open kitchen. After dinner, you’re welcome back to the lounge for some more wine and/or cocktails, or even a cigar out...

What can we say? The food is amazing, which is a given with chef Stefan Ekengren. Great ambiance, service and with a concise and modern wine list. Lilla Ego is well known for being run by three Chefs of the Year in Sweden and for being fully booked. However, you can come early and wait around for one of the drop in seats to be free, you will not be alone, nor disappointed. Although people come for the food, we also like to go there for the wine and relaxed ambiance. The Lilla Ego two wine lists are not the longest in town, but there is real breadth. The wine lists wines from well known wine regions like Burgundy, Piedmont, Wachau and California – some with good age too.

I live south of Södermalm in Stockholm, so this place is conveniently close to home, and I eat lunch here quite often. I like the interior; it has a nice and cosy feeling. With Mirabelle, sommelier David Lilja Lundin and chef Viktor Sandström have opened the French bistro they dreamed about, in the Vasastan neighbourhood of Stockholm. Monsieur Lundin was previously at Café Nizza where he managed the wine program. Mirabelle loves wine of course, but the list is fairly short, at least until more space is found. The food is rustic household French, and the paté de campagne makes us say oh la la. Did Vasastan really need another bistro? For a place like Mirabelle, there is always room.

The Rörstrandsgatan in Stockholm’s Vasastan neighbourhood may be packed with restaurants, but that didn’t stop the team behind Nektar from opening their small restaurant and wine bar there. As the name implies, there is wine! The wine list leans to the natural side but classicists need not fear, because in general the wine list is more pure than funk. The team behind Nektar have worked at top restaurants in Stockholm and Copenhagen and it shows. Professional but warm service. In summer the street turns into a pedestrian zone and there is an outdoor terrace.

Roslagsgatan in the Vasastan neighbourhood may not look like much but you have a bunch of good gastronomic addresses. Prospero opened in 2019 and the little space a few steps down is very sparse. When the plates arrives you will find more colour and taste, but still with simplicity. The wine program focuses on artisanal producers from Europe such as Julie Balagny and Strekov, which is all fine, but we also appreciate a few older bottles of Bordeaux as a contrast.

The Winery Hotel is the impressive modern urban winery and hotel that has opened just north of Stockholm. It houses a winery, hotel, bar, restaurant and conference rooms. The wine list has wines from the hotel as well as Italian producer Terreno which shares the same owner, but also everything from natural wines to mature Bordeaux. In the bar a number of wines are available by the glass and in oenomatic machines. These wines rotate often and are not listed.

Address: Tegelbacken 2, Stockholm
Tegelbacken is a colourful (literally speaking) little gem in the middle of central Stockholm that offers equal parts relaxed cosiness and elegant flair. With a view of the water and the Parliament building, the restaurant is a lovely oasis in the middle of the well-trafficked hubbub outside. The kitchen is led by well-known TV chef Markus Aujalay, and medium-sized dishes inspired by a variety of cuisines are served here. Always with pure, fine-tuned flavours and plenty of finesse. The wine list is not huge but very well curated and with a focus on Europe in general and France in particular,...

Teatergrillen opened in 1945 and is the sister restaurant of Riche, they also share the wine list. The dining room is one of the most beautiful in Stockholm and the classical cuisine and service are impeccable. Chances are you might notice one or two Swedish celebrities at any given night. The wine list boasts one of Stockholm’s heaviest Burgundy selections but with 900 listings, there is plenty of choice.

At the heights of Götgatan, Södermalm’s artery, The Hills has taken over a grand space with large windows and a small terrace that lends itself to people watching. Here you will find classic French-Swedish bistro dishes made à la maison. The herring and salmon shares the menu with entrecôte and paté campagne. (The latter’s mustard is worth a return visit on its own)

Sherry List of the Year Sweden, presented by González Byass 2022
The chefs from Aloë have created the kitchen and menu for the new luxury hotel Villa Dagmar in central Stockholm. (With Franzén’s new Astoria just down the street this is the new hotspot downtown). The DNA from Aloë is visible in the menu and the delicious and sometimes quite spicy dishes are served in beautiful dining rooms and the orangerie. Just next door you have the Östermalm saluhall. Aloë’s young but experienced sommelier Rasmus has created the wine list with the ambition to always present plenty of wines ready to drink. If you, like me, think that Aloë is one of the world’s best restau...

International Special Jury Prize 2023
The crew from the top and hip wine bar Folii at Södermalm has taken over the neighbouring space (hence the name voisine, neighbour in French) and opened a casual French bistro. The food is casual, French and well made. The ambiance in the little space is cosy and friendly.

Vinverket, located in northern Vasastan in central Stockholm has a homely feeling and is more of a wine bar than a restaurant. Going down the stairs a few steps, and you'll find a wine cooler reaching from floor to ceiling, and a solid kitchen table serving both as bar and workplace. Walk a few more meters and sit down by the small tables, perfect for a tête a tête. You will be served smaller dishes, influenced by the Mediterranean cuisine.

Woodstockholm is both a local bistro and a furniture producer, hence the name. The bistro is small, cosy and serves top quality food with different themes throughout the year. The wine list has its edges in France and Spain and even lists one or two older Burgundies.
