Authentique is a modern epicierie in Tufnell Park, north London. Foodwise, guest chefs rotate every few months with a full menu Thursday - Sunday. Cheese, charcuterie, salads and a hot dish are on earlier in the week. It's super relaxed, bright and spacious with a terrace out the back for summer drinking. Run by four friends - all French of course - who know and love their wine and fine regional produce which they also sell from the large deli section. Not many places manage to successfully combine shop, wine bar, cafe and bistro but they've nailed it - Authentique by name and nature.

Sommelier Alexandra Price is behind the eclectic and appealing selection, which gives extra nods to the Loire, Beaujolais, Savoie and the Jura. An original touch is how she has thoughtfully organised the list by climate as opposed to country/region – Maritime, Mediterranean and Continental. The kitchen pushes out tasty, wine-friendly snacks and plates, allowing you to have a nibble or make a meal of...

The list mid-sized list has a particular focus on the Rhone, plus a nice range of Champagnes. Burgundy and Italy also well represented, with a splattering of Spain, Central Europe and New World. The hotly anticipated London wine bar and restaurant Bright opened in Spring 2018 and has been packed ever since. It's the third outpost from the P Franco / Noble Fine Liquor stable in Hackney - all championing natural and low intervention wines with a fun-loving passion. The small open kitchen knocks out some seriously good wine-friendly plates, taking inspiration from all over the world (whether it's their house-rolled pasta or utterly 'grammable Katsu Sando). Pet Nat, Grower Champagne, skin contact whits and plenty of juicy 'vin de soif' are the order of the day on the wine list and whilst...

A sister of sorts to Hill & Szrok in Hackney (the butcher that turns into a wine bar and bistro at night and former winner of our UK Best Short Wine List 2021), Hector’s boasts a similarly deep cellar of rare finds and older vintages. Unassuming but impress...

Sparkling Wine List of the Year UK 2022

Trendy and sophisticated wine bar in the heart of Covent Garden, Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels (CVS for short) looks more like a cocktail bar – unsurprising as it is part of the Experimental Cocktail Club group who operate both wine and cocktail bars in London and Paris. The wine list is not quite as natural as the name might suggest (although there are plenty of natural / biodynamic options featured) but it is certainly very good nonetheless – it’s long without being intimidating; French heavy with all regions skillfully covered at all price points. There’s more than enough choice from the...

Best Short List of the Year UK 2021

Leroy is a wine bar & restaurant in London's Shoreditch from Sommeliers Ed Thaw and Jack Lewens. It opened shortly after their original venture Ellory in Hackney closed in March of 2018. As well as sharing a name with two great producers (Richard in the Loire, Lalou in Burgundy) Leroy was serendipitously one of their pet names for Ellory, since many people were unable to pronounce it correctly. Inside it’s light but cosy, simply decorated with some elegant wine prints on the wall. The menu aims for simplicity and flavour – food that is thoughtful but not showy. Leroy is a place to stop in for...

Medar is a smart yet relaxed fine dining restaurant in deepest, darkest Chelsea (World’s End of Kings Road) with an enthusiastic and committed approach to wine. Italian Melania Battiston is their current head sommelier, having previously been at 2850. The wine list is broadly classical yet comprehensive – 600+ bins that arguably tick most boxes. Twenty-four wines by the glass is very welcoming, and prices are not as outrageous as you might expect for this part of town. It’s a favourite of west London wine lovers and the trade, not least because they also offer very friendly corkage (£10 at...

Located in Bloomsbury on the quaintly historic Lamb’s Conduit Street, it’s Parisian inspired and feels as if it’s been there forever. The wine bar at the front is light and comfortable, with prize tables in the double fronted bay windows, a roaring fire in the colder months and walls adorned with the very cool front covers of their eponymous wine magazine. The restaurant at the back is cosy and inviting. The food is classic Franglais bistro fare – ideal for wine. To be honest,...

Pied a Terre is an enduring stalwart of classy, contemporary French fine dining – the longest standing independent Michelin-starred restaurant in the UK no less – yet one that has moved with the times and their global wine list is as sharp as you’d expect. Buying en primeur year on year coupled with meticulous storage affords them depth and to list wines only when ready – and there’s plenty at all price points with some age (a rarity of lists these days). Stylistically everything is covered with aplomb, with an unsurprising focus on French wines (not to mention a concise but top-drawer Cali...

Established in June 2018, Quality Wines are actually situated on a historic vineyard from the St John's order of the Catholic Church dating back to 1100. There's a concise but perfectly formed menu of small plates and snacks. They operate as a wine shop and deli throughout the day and a wine bar in the evenings - simply add on £15 to the retail price and get drinking (there is no wine list). The food is an hommage to European wine bar food with a Quality Chop Twist (game & British ingredients coming to the fore). The wine selection is always changing buying from a large number of the best impo...
