Over 100 wineries populate the Niagara wine region spanning from Niagara-on-the-lake to St.Catherines to the town of Lincoln. Whether you are an Ontario wine lover or visiting from afar, the diversity of wine styles of Niagara (from the classic cool climate Riesling and Chardonnay to the elegant Syrahs and Cabernet Francs) offer a wonderful surprise. From the old-fashioned farmhouse to the modern & futuristic, here is our guide of our favourite wineries to visit in Niagara, from east to west.     First-time visitors to Stratus Vineyards will be impressed with the ultra-modern, glass-covered, sustainability-certified tasting room. The main wines from French winemaker J-L Groux are the Stratus Red and White; each year a unique blend of grapes. These are long-lived wines and back vintages are often featured in tasting flights. In addition, Stratus also has range of single-varietal, small-lot (experimental) wines such as Tannat and Sangiovese as well a Mourvedre Icewine.

    This is the first proprietary label under Niagara winemaking veteran Andrzej Lipinski. Previously operating as a “virtual winery” in Beamsville; 2013 marked the family’s first season in their own facility in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Focusing on wild fermentation and the appassimento winemaking method (drying of the grapes), Big Head Wines is producing small-batch artisanal wines. The tastings are highly informative and entertaining.

    Peller Estates, a Canadian wine pioneer, is home to Niagara’s only igloo-like lounge where you can taste Icewine at -10 C. Peller’s Winery Restaurant offers seasonal menus to be enjoyed with a great vineyard view. Party in the Vineyard at the annual food truck event in spring and country music festival in summer.

    Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery is built on land that has been in the Lowrey family since the 19th century. The viticulture is organic and the winery produces a range of white, red and sparking wines, as well as rosé and icewine. The Ravine restaurant has a patio overlooking the vineyards and serves a seasonal menu based on locally sourced ingredients.

    Southbrook Vineyards is Canada’s first certified organic and biodynamic winery. Owners Bill and Marilyn Redelmeier, along with winemaker Ann Sperling, focus on rich Chardonnays and structured reds made with classic Bordeaux varieties. Other interesting wines come in the form of an orange wine (skin-fermented Vidal) as well as a fortified Chardonnay. Tastings can be paired with cheese and charcuterie plates.

    Henry of Pelham Family Estate is one of the early pioneering wineries in Niagara. Locals have been loving the Baco Noir Reserve for years. Henry of Pelham also had one of the first good traditional method sparklings coming out of Ontario with the traditional method Cuvee Catherine Brut and the more recent Estate Blanc de Blanc.

    13th Street Winery is located near the town of St. Catherines and has a wide range of wines from Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chardonnay, Riesling as well as Sparkling Wines. The on-site 13th Street Bakery is open daily and offers fresh-baked goods. It is common for visitors to enjoy some baked goodies with the wine and then take some to-go.

    Located in Jordan Village, Creekside Estate Winery creates wines which are bold in flavour (the Syrah and Sauvignon Blancs stand out). The atmosphere in the tasting room is fun and relaxed – though the wines are serious, they definitely do not take themselves too seriously here. The new restaurant, called the Deck at Creekside has covered area and a very nice view of the pond and vineyards. In the summer, local artists play live music and there is great BBQ foods to be had. When visiting, we recommend a look into the large underground barrel cellar.

    Westcott Vineyards, named after the founding family, is small family owned & run winery specializing in the production of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling wines. The winery and tasting room is housed in a 200-year-old restored Mennonite barn, and there is a VIP room for private tastings.

    Flat Rock Cellars is located in the charming town of Jordan in Niagara and is one of the first gravity fed wineries in Niagara. They have cool climate standouts of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines that are all sold under crown cap.

    Pearl Morissette is the creation of Québec-born winemaker Francois Morissette and Toronto-based real estate developer Mel Pearl. Morissette has trained in Burgundy and is at the forefront of natural and low intervention winemaking in Ontario. The wines are not made in large quantities and the winery is not always open for tastings or cellar door sales, so be sure to reach out before a visit.

    Cave Spring Cellars is located right on the main street of the charming town of Jordan. Cave Spring rieslings have long been one of the top terroir rieslings in Niagara with the Cave Spring CSV riesling leading the way.

    Domaine Queylus is rooted in Burgundian style pinot noir and chardonnay. The winemaking is directed by well known local chief winemaker Thomas Bachelder and led by Kelly Mason, head wine maker. The pinots and chardonnays at Domaine Queylus are excellently made and a good representation of the type of cool climate terroir for pinots and chardonnay in Niagara.

    Kacaba Vineyards & Winery is located along the Niagara Escarpment Bench and produced its first vintage in 1999. The winery produces small quantities of red, white, rosé and sparkling wines and visitors to the estate give very high marks to the experience. Kacaba Vineyards & Winery is family owned and was the first winery in Ontario to plant Syrah.

    Moray Tawse’s family-owned winery is founded on Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Using organic and biodynamic farming practices, winemakers Paul Pender and Rene van Ede are exploring single vineyard expressions and expanded the wines to include Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and select Meritage blends.

    Redstone Winery in Beamsville is named for its red clay soil and large stones found in many of their vineyards. Moray Tawse and the winemaking team of Rene Van Ede and Paul Pender are exploring varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Syrah. The hospitality centre built in 2015 houses a combination tasting room and 80-seat restaurant.

    Malivoire Wine Company is Ontario’s first gravity-flow winery, built in 1998 upon an elaborately recycled Quonset hut. Winemaker Shiraz Mottiar focuses on excellence in cool-climate varieties including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Recently, Malivoire’s “Ladybug” Rose and fresh Gamays have garnered much attention. The Malivoire winery store is open to visitors every day of the year.

    Owner Harald Thiel’s uncompromising attention to detail has landed this small, yet modern Beamsville Bench estate winery in the Canadian Wine Awards’ top 10 every year since it opened in 2007. Hidden Bench’s focus is to showcase the terroir of the Beamsville Bench through award-winning Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, all made with organically certified estate fruit.

    Thirty Bench Wine Makers is a small-lot producer, focusing production on estate grown Riesling as well as some select classic red varieties. View the winery comfortably during the personalized seated tasting and discover the character of the vineyards with a winery tour.

    Housed in a restored 1850s barn, Leaning Post winery focuses on Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah on a smaller scale production. The service is very friendly and family oriented – owners Ilya and Nadia Senchuk can often be seen greeting visitors and providing a personal tasting experience.
